Streamline your pipeline with USD Preview Look Export

Mari 5.0 ships with a workflow to author USD Preview looks for assets look-developed in Mari, so you can easily create preview looks for DCC’s with Hydra-powered viewports, like Foundry’s own Katana. This brings look development and lighting teams closer together, enabling you to develop preview looks, alongside their production look, earlier in your pipeline.

VFX Reference Platform CY2020

In a move that continues our commitment to align with the VFX Reference Platform, Mari’s third party libraries have been upgraded in order to match those specified by the VFX Reference Platform CY2020, so VFX vendors can more easily build in-house software to work within Mari. OCIO in Mari now adheres to the CY2021 specification of 2.0, enabling artists and studios to use OCIO v2 config files.

Flattening bake speed reduced by up to 50%

Through our continued collaboration with Weta, we’ve been able to bring artists some amazing optimizations to Mari’s core technology. Mari 5.0 features accelerated shader flattening speeds when converting procedural layers to paint, flattening a node network to a Bake Point or simply committing paint to your layers. Mari’s GPU and CPU as part of its flattening engine now run more in parallel, reducing the flattening bake speed by up to 50% in some scenarios. The result: less coffee breaks, and more creativity.

New and improved Brush Color Dynamics

Experience an unprecedented level of creative control with your brush strokes thanks to new dynamic color controls to the Brush Settings. Change the brush tip color for each of the multiple splats within a brush stroke, or change between each brush stroke. This can be achieved through various effects like the much-requested Hue/Saturation/Value brush jittering feature, including giving you the ability to precisely adjust the range of each of these effects together or in isolation. Combined, these improvements allow you to create more stylistic brush strokes than ever before.

Brush Tip Improvements

Mari 5.0’s enhanced brush engine unlocks a huge amount of additional artistic freedom. Artists can now specify whether a brush tip's Alpha is generated from an image file's Red, Green, Blue, Alpha or Luminance Channels, giving you complete control on how your custom brush tips are generated. Additionally the ability to utilize the full RGBA color data from an image file, including colorspace controls, has been added to Mari 5.0, allowing you to paint full color decals instead of solid colors for the first time.

Bake Point Filters for more procedural power

Bake Points are used by artists to flatten complex graph networks into an image set for increased performance. In Mari 5.0, you can super charge them by applying Filters —such as Gaussian Blur—to the baked data all within Mari’s NodeGraph as part of a completely non-destructive workflow, achieving a higher level of proceduralism with Mari than ever before.

Five new Gradient Procedural patterns

Consisting of Camera or Object Distant Gradient, Camera or Object Facing Gradient and Two Point Gradient, Mari 5.0’s new Procedural patterns for layers and nodes allow artists to make soft, area driven procedural masks using Projectors and Locators in their Project scene. New procedurals like these help reduce the onerous task of repainting gradients by hand should a model or UVs change later in production.

Cleaner Node Graph networks with new Grid Snapping

As part of ongoing development plans to improve artist quality of life, Mari 5.0’s Node Graph now comes with Grid Snapping, with user controls for grid cell height and width to fine-tune their experience. The added ability to snap nodes inline with a grid helps to make messy, hard-to-follow Node Graph networks a thing of the past.
